In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “My son, forget not my law; but let your heart keep my commandments. For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to you”, and in chapter three and verse three of Proverbs Solomon said, “let not mercy and truth forsake you” where we read,
Let not mercy and truth forsake you: bind them about your neck;
write them upon the table of your heart:
The verse begins, “Let not mercy and truth forsake you: bind them about your neck;”. Solomon began with the words, “let not mercy” or “do not allow or permit goodness, kindness and faithfulness” “and truth” which means “and firmness, faithfulness, sureness, stability, continuance and reliability” “forsake you” or “leave, depart from, abandon or be set free from you, Solomon's son”: “bind them” which means “tie, confine and conspire them, mercy and truth” “about your neck” or “on, over and around your, Solomon's son's, neck of his body”. Solomon desired that his son never abandon goodness, kindness, faithfulness and reliability, and they were to be so close to him that they surrounded his neck.
The verse goes on to say, “write them upon the table of your heart:” Solomon continued with the words, “write them upon the table” or “inscribe, engrave and record them, Solomon's laws and commandments on the board, slab, tablet and plate” “of your heart” which means “belonging to your, Solomon's son's, soul, mind, will, desires, conscience, living being and seat of emotions and passions”. Solomon instructed his son to inscribe his laws and commandments upon the tablet of his soul, mind and will.
When we consider Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how he never wanted his son to abandon goodness, kindness, faithfulness, stability and reliability. These characteristics were so important that his son needed to inscribe them upon his soul and mind. God's principles for life are for our benefit, and when we observe and obey His commands, we will not only bless Him, but also bless ourselves as well. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us value “mercy and truth” and keep them close to our souls and minds.
Next time Solomon says, “so shall you find favor and good understanding”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
