Merchandise Better than Silver - Proverbs 3:14

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said to his son, “Happy is the man that finds wisdom, and the man that gets understanding”, and in chapter three and verse fourteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver” where we read,

For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

The verse begins, “For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, ...”. Solomon began with the words, “for the merchandise of it” or “because, since and on account that the profit and gain belonging to finding wisdom and getting understanding” “is better than the merchandise” which means “exists as more good, pleasant, agreeable, rich and valuable in estimation” “of silver” or “belonging to the precious silver metal”. Solomon shared how the profit and gain from finding wisdom and getting understanding is more valuable than precious silver.

The verse continues, “... and the gain thereof than fine gold.” Solomon added the words, “and the gain thereof” or “and the produce, product, revenue, yield and income thereof which refers to finding wisdom and getting understanding” “than fine gold” which means “better than the precious, incisive mined gold metal”. Solomon said the revenue and income from finding wisdom and getting understanding is more precious than refined gold.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon considered attaining “wisdom and understanding” to be more precious than valuable “silver and gold” metals. God knows this is true, and He desires to bless everyone with His wisdom and knowledge and how to implement them in their lives. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of everyone, and when we yield to Him, He will provide forgiveness of sins, everlasting life and the skill, shrewdness, cunning, intelligence, insight and discretion that far exceed any worldly metal treasures that we may obtain.
