Paths of Uprightness and Ways of Darkness - Proverbs 2:13

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said to his son, “When wisdom enters into your heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto your soul. Discretion shall preserve you, understanding shall keep you. To deliver you from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaks froward things”, and in chapter two and verse thirteen of Proverbs Solomon shared about, “the paths of uprightness” and “the ways of darkness” where we read,

Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;

The verse begins, “Who leave the paths of uprightness, .... Solomon began with the words, “who leave the paths” or “the person that departs from, looses and forsakes the road, manner, travels and way of living” “of righteousness” which means “pertaining to straightness, evenness and what is right and due”. Solomon shared how the people who are “evil” depart from the straight and right way of living.

The verse goes on to say, “... to walk in the ways of darkness;” Solomon continued with the words, “to walk” or “to amble about and make their way” “in the ways” which means “within the road, manner, travels and way of living” “of darkness” or “pertaining to obscurity, misery, death, ignorance, sorrow and wickedness”. Solomon added how the “evil” people “leave the paths of righteousness” live according to misery, ignorance, death and wickedness.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon said people who are “evil and speak froward things” depart from the straight and right way to live, and they make their way according to misery and death. So many people resist the path that God has for their life, and rather than submit to Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for their sins, they love “the ways of darkness” and live their lives accordingly. Jesus said, “this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (See John 3:19), and in His words we see the reason people do not come to Christ. God's invitation is to everyone, and when we submit to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and lead us away from “evil ways” and toward His right way of living.

Next time Solomon says they, “rejoice to do evil”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
