Rejoicing to Do Evil - Proverbs 2:14

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said to his son, “When wisdom enters into your heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto your soul. Discretion shall preserve you, understanding shall keep you. To deliver you from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaks froward things. Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness”, and in chapter two and verse fourteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “who rejoice to do evil” where we read,

Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;

The verse begins, “Who rejoice to do evil, .... Solomon began with the words, “who rejoice” or “what persons are joyful, glad and merry” “to do evil” which means “to make, perform and produce bad, disagreeableness, displeasure, sadness, unkindness, distress, adversity, injury, wrong and wickedness”. Solomon shared how the people who are “evil and speak froward things” are glad to commit wickedness and malignant acts and deeds.

The verse continues, “... and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;” Solomon added the words, “and delight” or “and exult, are glad and spin around” “in the frowardness” which means “within the perversity and fraud” “of the wicked” or “belonging to people who are evil, noisome, grievous, harmful, cause ill favor and are afflicting”. Solomon said the people who are “evil and speak froward things” also spin around with joy within their afflicting and causing ill favor.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon knew the people who were inclined toward “evil” and “froward speaking” were happy about their involvement in “wickedness” and fraudulent ways. Their path of living was sinful, and these are the types of sins for which Jesus died on the cross. God loves us, and even when we have lived in a manner that is opposed to Him, He will forgive our sins and grant us everlasting life when we yield to Him. Let all who read these words turn away from pernicious ways and receive Jesus into their hearts. (See 1 John 1:9)

Next time Solomon says, “whose ways are crooked”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
