In the book of Proverbs Solomon said to his son, “Let not mercy and truth forsake you: bind them about your neck; write them upon the table of your heart. So shall you find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man”, and in chapter three and verse five of Proverbs Solomon said, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart” where we read,
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding.
The verse begins, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart;”. Solomon began with the words, “trust in the LORD” or “have confidence, be bold, secure and safe within Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “with all your heart” which means “by the use of the whole, total and entire soul, mind, will, desires, conscience, living being and seat of emotions and affections”. Solomon instructed his son to be secure and have confidence within Jehovah God by the use of his total and entire soul, mind and will.
The verse goes on to say, “and lean not unto your own understanding.” Solomon continued with the words, “and lean not unto” or “and do not trust in, support yourself or rely upon” “your own understanding” which means “your, Solomon's son's, own personal discernment, faculties or wisdom”. Solomon told his son not to put his faith and confidence within his own faculties and discernment.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon instructed his son as to where he should be confident. God alone was his security, and therein he could place all the faith of his soul. He was not to “trust” in his own discernment concerning situations and circumstances he encountered. God wants to be our provision and protection because He loves us, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind to prove His commitment to us. We can “trust in the LORD” with all our being, and when we are tempted to have confidence within ourselves, let us be reminded of Solomon's words and put our faith in God.
Next time Solomon says, “in all your ways acknowledge” the LORD, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
