In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “My son, forget not my law; but let your heart keep my commandments”, and in chapter three and verse two of Proverbs Solomon said, “for length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to you” where we read,
For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to you.
The verse begins, “For length of days, and long life, and peace, ...”. Solomon began with the words, “for length of days” or “because, since and on account that long periods of sunrises to sunsets”, “and long life” which means “and measures, whole and drawn out ages, years and revolutions of time”, “and peace” or “and calm, tranquility, health, safety and security” shall exist according to the following. Solomon shared how long periods of sunrises to sunsets and drawn out ages with tranquility and security will occur according to the following.
The verse continues, “... shall they add to you.” Solomon added the words, “shall they add” or “will they, Solomon's laws and commandments, increase, join and gather” “to you” which means “toward you, Solomon's son”. Solomon said “length of days, and long life, and peace” would increase in his son's life when he observed and obeyed Solomon's laws and commandments.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon knew his son's life would be extended when he kept and obeyed his instructions. Solomon was looking out for his son's best interest, and when we consider God's “law and commandments”, we understand His provision for us as well. God gave His law, (See Exodus 20), people violated His law, (See Romans 3:23) and people needed to be saved from sin's penalty which is death. (See Romans 6:23) “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”. (See John 3:16) When we submit to Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us keep His commandments as “long life and length of days” are added to us as well.
Next time Solomon says, “let not mercy and truth forsake you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
