John Falling Down Before the Angel Revelation 22:8

After sharing much of the beauty of the heavenly city and looking upon the wonders that shall be there, Jesus declared to John the apostle, “Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keeps the sayings of the prophecy of this book”, and in Revelation chapter twenty-two and verse eight John shares, “I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which showed” him “these things” where we read:

And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen,
I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
The verse reads, And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, ... John began with the words, “and I John” which means “and John himself” “saw” or “discerned, perceived, discovered and gazed upon” “these things” which means “the things shown to him by the angel”, “and heard him” which means “and John was endowed with the faculty of hearing, understanding and perceiving what was sounded and said”. “And when” or “at the time and moment” “I heard” which means “John was given the faculty for hearing, understanding and perceiving” “and seen” or “and looked upon, beheld, perceived, discerned, discovered and observed”. John testifies that he “saw and heard” all “these things” and afterwards acted as he is going to disclose next.

The verse continues “... I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which showed me these things. John added the words, “I fell down” which means “John prostrated himself and descended from a higher to a lower place” “to worship” which refers to “to kneel or prostrate to do homage or make obeisance” “before” which means “in front of and in the presence of” “the feet” or “the feet upon which one walks” “of the angel” which refers to “belonging to the messenger, envoy and one sent” “which showed me” or “who exposed and gave evidence or proof of them to John” “these things” which refers to “all the things shown to John by the angel”. John shared how he “bowed down in obeisance” who presented all “these things” to him.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we see his reaction to the overwhelming things he “saw and heard”. He bowed and knelt to “worship” the angel to which he was corrected immediately. The “messenger” is often mistakenly “adored” by people rather than God. The agent who brings the “message” should not be “worshiped” because all praise and glory are to go to God. God desires every person to understand and realize that He and His Son Jesus are the Ones who are responsible for all these beautiful things, and when people, angels or any other “messengers” reveal them, they are never to be exalted to the position of the Most High. Jesus saves, and all the rest are only agents who reveal that truth.

Next time John shares how the angel tells him, “see that you do it not, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
