John
the apostle wrote, “And
the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil,
and Satan, which deceives the whole world: he was cast out into the
earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud
voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the
kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of
our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and
night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the
word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the
death. Therefore rejoice, you
heavens, and you that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabitants of the
earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having
great wrath, because he knows that he has but a short time, and when
the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the
woman which brought forth the man child.
And
to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might
fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a
time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent”,
and in chapter twelve and verse fifteen of Revelation John shared how
the “the
serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood” where
we read:
And
the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman,
that
he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
The
verse reads, “And
the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman,
...”
John
began with the words, “and
the serpent”
which means “and the snake-like creature who deceived Eve and was
regarded by the Jews as the devil” “cast
out”
or “threw, scattered and poured out” “of
his mouth”
which means “of the serpent's orifice in it's face used for
speaking, eating an breathing” “water”
or “like water in rivers, fountains or pools” “as
a flood”
which means “like a stream, river or torrent” “after
the woman”
or “pursuing and chasing the female John saw which represented
Israel”. John watched as the “snake-like creature” or the
“devil” spewed “a torrential river” which pursued Israel as
she fled to the wilderness.
The
verse goes on to say, “...
that
he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.”
John
continued with the words, “that
he might cause her”
which means “that the snake-like creature could make, produce and
be the means through which Israel was” “to
be carried away”
or “overwhelmed and drowned” “of
the flood”
which means “by the torrential river”. John stated the reason for
the “serpent's flood” was to attempt to “drown” Israel before
she reached the wilderness.
When
we consider John's words in this verse, we discover the wickedness of
the enemy of God, the devil. Satan desires to destroy Israel because
they were the nation through whom God's Son Jesus, the Messiah, was
born, and He was to become the “Savior and Lord” of the whole
world. Everyone who believes and trusts in Jesus shall be “saved”,
and the “devil” hates that idea. God's chosen people Israel have
been assaulted time and time again to destroy them and the Messiah
Jesus, and though many have tried, none shall be successful, this
“flood” produced by “the devil” shall fail as well.
Next
time John shares how, “the
earth helped the woman”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
