John the apostle wrote how in the middle of the feast, “Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. And the Jews marveled, saying, How knows this man letters, having never learned? Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. He that speaks of himself seeks his own glory: but he that seeks his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law? Why go you about to kill me? The people answered and said, You have a devil: who goes about to kill you? Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and you all marvel. Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and you on the sabbath day circumcise a man”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty-three of his book, John shared how Jesus asked the people, “are you angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?” where we read:
If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken;
are you angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?
The verse reads, “If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken;” John began with the words, “If a man” or “whether a male human being” “on the sabbath day” which means “upon the seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work” “receive circumcision” or “take hold of, claim and procure the cutting away the flesh of a male human being”, “that the law of Moses” which means “so the rule, precept and injunction from Moses whose name means drawing out and the legislator of the Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish religion” “should be broken” or “is in no way to be loosed, released, dissolved or dismissed”. John shared how Jesus referred to the way the Jewish people gave an exception to “Moses' law” for the “Sabbath Day” when it was necessary to “circumcise” a male on that day.
The verse goes on to say, “are you angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?” John continued with the words, “are angry at me” which means “do you Jewish people exist as mad, enraged and irritable at me, Jesus”, “because I have made a man every whit whole” or “since and on account that I, Jesus, have caused, fashioned and prepared a male human being to be totally and completely sound and healthy” “on the sabbath day” which means “upon the seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work”. John shared how Jesus asked the Jewish people who were confronting Him whether they should be “mad or irritated” with Him because He completely “cured” a person on the “Sabbath Day”.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus confronted the Jewish people who accused Him by appealing to their own giving of an exception to a person being “circumcised” on the “Sabbath Day” versus Him performing a “healing” on the “Sabbath Day”. They excused themselves, but they accused Jesus. God desires “truth” in the inward parts, and those who make exceptions for themselves and bring accusations against Jesus are not being “truthful” before God or themselves. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they “believe and trust” in Him as their “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins and provide them with everlasting life. Let all who read these words carefully consider the way the evaluate the works of God.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells the people, “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
