John the apostle wrote how in the middle of the feast, “Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. And the Jews marveled, saying, How knows this man letters, having never learned?”, and in chapter seven and verse sixteen of his book, John shared how Jesus said, “my doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me” where we read:
Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
The verse reads, “Jesus answered them, and said, ...” John began with the words, “Jesus answered them” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and began to speak to the Jewish people who marveled”, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following words. John shared how Jesus began to respond to the Jewish people who “marveled” that He knew the “letters” so well.
The verse goes on to say, “... My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.” John continued with the words, “my doctrine” which means “my, Jesus', teaching and instruction” “is not mine” or “exists in no way and manner as Jesus' own”, “but his that sent me” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the One who dispatched and assigned me, Jesus”. John shared how Jesus said His “teaching and instruction” was not His own, but rather belongs to the “One” who “dispatched” Him.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus would not take “credit” for the instruction He was giving the people. His Heavenly Father, God, gave Him all He needed as a “man” to instill doctrine and impart instruction from the Holy Scriptures. Jesus demonstrated not only that He was God come in the flesh, but He also showed His humanity to whom we all can relate. Jesus would not take the “glory” for that which He had learn, and anyone who gives teachings on the Holy Scriptures should take a lesson from Him. Jesus came to be the “Savior and Lord” of every person who puts their faith and trust in Him, and when He imparts to them doctrine they should give to others, let all glory and praise be unto Him for what has been learned.
Next time John shares how Jesus says, “if any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
