Daniel Astonied for an Hour - Daniel 4:19

In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream about a tree, and after declaring it to his wise men he said to Daniel, “This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now you, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but you are able: for the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and in chapter four and verse nineteen of his book Daniel said he was, “astoned for an hour” where we read,

Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spoke, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble you. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate you, and the interpretation thereof to your enemies.

The verse reads, “Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. Daniel began with the words, “then Daniel” or “at that time Daniel whose name means God is my judge”, “whose name was Belteshazzar” which means “whose name was changed to Belteshazzar which means lord of the straighten’s treasure”, “was astonied”  or “existed and stunned and appalled” “for one hour” which means “for the length of time pertaining to a single hour”, “and his thoughts troubled him” or “and his, Daniel’s, cogitations and mental conceptions frightened, alarmed and dismayed him, Daniel”. Daniel shared how the words and dream of King Nebuchadnezzar caused him to be stunned for an hour’s time because the mental conceptions he perceived were frightening and alarming.

The verse continues, “the king spoke, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble you.” Daniel added the words, “the king spoke” which means “the royal ruler and leader, King Nebuchadnezzar, replied and responded”,  and said, Beltehazzar or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed, Belteshazzar whose name means lord of the straighten’s treasure”, “let not the dream” which means “do not allow or permit the mental imagery”, “or the interpretation thereof” or “or the rendering and meaning of the dream”, “trouble you” which means “frighten and alarm you, Daniel or Belteshazzar”. Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar responded to his despondency by encouraging him not to allow the “dream” nor the meaning of it to cause him terror and dismay.

Finally the verse says, “Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate you, and the interpretation thereof to your enemies.” Daniel concluded this verse with the words, “Belteshazzar answered” or “Belteshazzar whose name means lot of the straighten’s treasure or Daniel replied and responded” “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “my Lord” or “my, Daniel’s, master and king”, “the dream be to them that hate you” which means “the mental imagery exists on behalf of the people who are foes, odious and as enemies who loathe, you, King Nebuchadnezzar”, “and the interpretation thereof” or “and the rendering and meaning of the dream”. Daniel ended this verse by sharing how he told King Nebuchadnezzar, whom he acknowledged was his earthly master, that the “dream” and it’s meaning was presented on behalf of the people who were as enemies and foes to him.

When we consider Daniel's words in this verse, we discover how he was deeply affected by the mental conceptions he received because of King Nebuchadnezzar’s “dream”. For an “hour of time”, Daniel was stunned. He knew what this “dream” meant, and the terror of the revelation of these things must have been evident, because it caused King Nebuchadnezzar to tell him not to be “troubled”. Daniel knew this “dream” was on behalf of the foes of King Nebuchadnezzar, and we shall see more about what the “dream” meant in our next verses. For now let us be reminded that God was aware of these things well in advance of them ever being given to King Nebuchadnezzar or Daniel. God had a plan to save mankind through His Son Jesus who would die on the cross for the sins of everyone, and He was to be raised from the dead after three days so everyone who believe and trusts in Him as their “Savior and Lord” may be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and provided with the comfort of His Holy Spirit. With this personal relationship with God, anyone who believes may live in a manner that is without fear and in alignment with Him and His ways.

Next time Daniel shares with King Nebuchadnezzar about, “the tree that you saw”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
