Great Babylon that Nebuchadnezzar Built? - Daniel 4:30

In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream, and Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar that the dream meant he would be driven away from men, eating grass with the animals with the night due falling upon him for seven seasons until he realized that God is in control of all people. “All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzarand “at the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon”, and in chapter four and verse thirty  of his book Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar said, “is not this great Babylon, the that I have built” where we read,

The king spoke, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honor of my majesty?

The verse reads, “The king spoke, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom …” Daniel began with the words, “the king spoke” or “the royal ruler and leader, Nebuchadnezzar, replied and responded”, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “is not this great Babylon” or “is the empire in which Nebuchadnezzar ruled in no way or manner chief, mastering and powerful Babylon whose name means confusion (by mixing) the ancient site and/or capital of Babylonia (modern Hillah) situated on the Euphrates”, “that I have built” which means “that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have constructed and made” “for the house” or “on behalf of the dwelling place and habitation” “of the kingdom” which means “belonging to the royal reign and authority”. Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar began to take credit for constructing the mighty city of “Babylon” which he formed on behalf of the dwelling place pertaining to his royal reign.

The verse continues, “… by the might of my power, and for the honor of my majesty?” Daniel added the words, “by the might of my power” which means “through the strength and force of my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, ability”, “and for the honor” or “and on behalf of the esteem and glory” “of my majesty” which means “pertaining to my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, magnificence, dignity, pomp and grandeur”? Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar took credit through his own strength, power, ability and magnificence for building Babylon.

When we meditate the words in this verse, we learn about the arrogance and pride of  King Nebuchadnezzar. He believed that he was the reason for the magnificent Babylonian kingdom, and he took credit for building it himself. God gave King Nebuchadnezzar his position and ability, and even as He provides gifts to every person, He did so with Nebuchadnezzar. God loves people, and He wants to bless us with gifts of His Holy Spirit when we receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. God will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide us with strength and ability to work in His Kingdom without ever receiving glory and taking credit for the work on our own.

Next time Daniel shares what happened, “while the word was in the king’s mouth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
