Lifting My Eyes to Heaven - Daniel 4:34

In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar was in his palace in Babylon, and, “The king spoke, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honor of my majesty? While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from you. And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make you to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomsoever he will.  The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-four of his book Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar said, “I Nebuchadnezzar lifted my eyes unto heaven” where we read,

And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my eyes unto heaven, and my understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honored him that lives for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:

The verse reads, “And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my eyes unto heaven, and my understanding returned unto me, …” Daniel began with the words, “and at the end of the days” or “and at the completion and finish pertaining to the sunrises and sunsets” “I Nebuchadnezzar” which means “I Nebuchadnezzar whose name means ‘may Nebo protect the crown’ and was the great king of Babylon who captured Jerusalem and carried Judah captive” “lifted up my eyes” or “raised my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, physical eyes for sight and seeing” “unto heaven” which means “toward the sky, atmosphere and sidereal heaven where God dwells and other spiritual beings”, “and my understanding returned to me” or “and my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, power of knowing and wisdom came back to me, King Nebuchadnezzar”. Daniel shared how the completion of the time went by, and King “Nebuchadnezzar” said he raised his physical eyes toward the sky and the power of knowing and wisdom came back to him.

The verse continues, “… and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honored him that lives for ever, …” Daniel added the words, “and I blessed the most High” which means “and I, King Nebuchadnezzar, gave honor and glory to the highest Supreme Deity”, “and I praised” or “and I, King Nebuchadnezzar, gave laud and adoration” “and honored him that lives forever” which means “and glorified him, the Supreme Deity Jehovah God, who remains alive unto eternity and everlasting”. Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar gave honor, glory, laud and adoration to the eternal living Jehovah God.

Finally the verse says, “whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:” Daniel concluded this verse with the words, “whose dominion” or “the Supreme Deity’s sovereignty and realm” “is an everlasting dominion” which means “exists as an eternal, forever and perpetual sovereignty and realm”, “and his kingdom” or “and his, the Supreme Deity’s, royal realm and kingly rule” “is from generation to generation” which means “exists from age to age”. Daniel ended this verse by referring to the eternal nature of Jehovah God’s sovereignty and how His royal reign exist eternally and from age to age.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel how King Nebuchadnezzar was totally convinced that the Supreme Deity Jehovah God ruled over all mankind, and his reign is eternal. This was a changed man, and regardless of how powerful or sinful a person may be, God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of everyone. When He raised Jesus from the dead, God made the way when we believe and trust in Him to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and provided with the wisdom of His Holy Spirit so we will know God is in control regardless who is in office or in positions of authority in the world.

Next time Daniel says, “all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
