A Dream that Made Nebuchadnezzar Afraid - Daniel 4:5

In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar said, “I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace”, and in chapter four and verse five of his book Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar said, “I saw a dream which made me afraid” where we read,

I saw a dream which made me afraid,

and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

The verse reads, “I saw a dream which made me afraid, ...” Daniel began with the words, “I saw a dream” or “I, King Nebuchadnezzar, noticed, discerned, distinguished and observed a vision or mental imagery” “which made me afraid” which means “that caused me, King Nebuchadnezzar, to exist in fear and dread”. Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar told the people of the world that he had a mental imagery that caused him to be terrified.

The verse goes on to say, “... and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.” Daniel continued with the words, “and the thoughts upon my bed” which means “and the mental conception, picture and fantasies on my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, couch or place of lying” “and the visions of my head” or “and the sights and appearance belonging to my physical head, mind or mental state” “troubled me” which means “frightened, alarmed and terrified me, King Nebuchadnezzar”. Daniel said the mental conceptions within his mind as he lie upon his “bed” caused him great fright and alarm.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel how King Nebuchadnezzar had another “dream” (See Daniel 2:1) which caused him to be afraid, and the mental images that came into his mind while he was lying upon his “bed” terrified and frightened him. In other words, King Nebuchadnezzar had a nightmare. We shall see what this dream was in our next few verses, but let us consider what it is like to have a nightmare. They can be frightening especially when we believe them to be true. God was working in the life of King Nebuchadnezzar, and He is able to work in this manner whenever He desires and with whomever He wishes. These frightful visions of King Nebuchadnezzar cause Him to seek “Daniel”, the man of God, and thereby eventually sought for God Himself. God wants us to be in a personal intimate relationship  with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the grave after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and use us in His Kingdom through His Holy Spirit either to have heavenly visions or to help those who receive them.

Next time King Nebuchadnezzar says, “bring in all the wise men of Babylon”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
