In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar said, “I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace. I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream. Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof. But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying, …”, and in chapter four and verse nine of his book Daniel shared how Nebuchadnezzar instructed him, “tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen”, where we read,
O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.
The verse reads, “O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no secret troubles you, …” Daniel began with the words, “O Belteshazzar” or “O lord of the straighten’s treasure”, “master of the magicians” which means “chief, captain and lord over the diviners, astrologers and writers and engravers of the occult”, “because I know that the spirit of the holy gods” or “since and on account that I, Nebuchadnezzar, am informed and aware that the mind belonging to the sacred and pure deities” “is in you” which means “exists within you, Belteshazzar who is Daniel”, “and no secret troubles you” or “and not any hidden mystery oppresses, compels or constrains you, Daniel”. Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar called him “the leader or ruler of the diviners, astrologers and writers and engravers of the occult” because he understood that the mind of the sacred deities existed within him and not any hidden mystery constrained him.
The verse goes on to say,, “... tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.” Daniel continued with the words, “tell me the visions” which means “speak, relate and declare to me, King Nebuchadnezzar, the look, sight and appearance” “of my dream” or “belonging to my, King Nebuchadnezzar’s, mental imagery”, “that I have seen” which means “that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw, observed, noticed and discerned”, “and the interpretation thereof” or “and the explanation and meaning of the dream”. Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar called upon Daniel to declare to him the appearance of his mental imagery and the meaning of it.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel more about King Nebuchadnezzar’s story of his “dream”. After the failure of his other “wise men” to reveal and give the explanation to his “dream”, he called upon “Daniel” whom he named “Belteshazzar” to declare and explain his mental imagery. We shall see more about this “dream” in our next verses, but for now let us consider that God is at work again in the empire of Babylon and within King Nebuchadnezzar as well. God will work in our lives because He wants us to live with Him forever. However, we have sin in our lives which separates us from God, and that sin is removed when we yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. God wants to forgive us, extend to us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will lead and guide us in our relationship with Him as we make our way in this unbelieving world.
Next time Daniel shares how Nebuchadnezzar said he saw, “a tree in the midst of the earth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
