A Lot for the Rest of Manasseh’s Children - Joshua 17:2

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “there was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the firstborn of Joseph; to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead: because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan, and in chapter seventeen and verse two of Joshua we learn how, “there was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh by their families” where we read,

There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh by their families; for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph by their families.

The verse reads, There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh by their families; Joshua or the writer began with the words, “there was also a lot” or “there existed even so and indeed a portion and share” “for the rest of the children of Manasseh” which means “on behalf of the left over, remainder and excess pertaining to the offspring and progeny belonging to Manasseh whose name means ‘causing to forget’ and was the eldest son of Joseph and progenitor of the tribe of Manasseh“by their families” or “according to their kinsmen, kindred and relatives”. Joshua or the writer shared how there existed a portion of land on behalf of the remainder of the offspring of “Manasseh” according to their kinsmen and relatives.

The verse continues, for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida:” Joshua or the writer added the words, “for the children” which means “because, since and on account of the offspring and progeny”, “of Abiezer” or “belonging to Abiezer whose name means ‘my father is help’ and was a Manassite, called ‘son’ of Gilead, also son of Gilead's sister”, “and for the children of Helek” which means “and on behalf of the offspring and progeny belonging to Helek whose name means ‘portion’ and was a descendant of Manasseh and the second son of Gilead”, “and for the children of Asriel” or “and on behalf of the offspring and progeny belonging to Asriel whose name means ‘I shall be prince of God’ and was a great-grandson of Manasseh, and son of Gilead”, “and for the children of Shechem” which means “on on behalf of the offspring and progeny belonging to Shechem whose name means ‘back or shoulder’ and was the son of Gilead and grandson of Manasseh, “and for the children of Hepher” or “and on behalf of the offspring and progeny belonging to Hepher whose name means ‘’a well” and was the “youngest son of Gilead and head of the family of Hepherites", “and for the children of Shemida” which means “and on behalf of the offspring and progeny belonging to Shemida whose name means ‘wise’ and was a son of Gilead, grandson of Manasseh, and progenitor of a family in Manasseh”. Joshua or the writer shared how the family of “Manasseh” which included, the offspring of “Aviezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher and Semida” received the inheritance given to their “tribe.

Finally the verse says, “these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph by their families.” Joshua or the writer concluded this verse with the words, “these were the male children” or “the above listed men were the male offspring and progeny” “of Manasseh” whose name means “‘causing to forget’ and was the eldest son of Joseph and progenitor of the tribe of Manasseh” “the son of Joseph” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Joseph whose name means ‘Jehovah has added’ and was the eldest son of Jacob by Rachel” “by their families” which means “according to their, the offspring of Manasseh’s, kindred, kinsmen and relatives”. Joshua or the writer ended this verse by reestablishing that the above mentioned male offspring descended from “Manasseh” who was “Joseph’s” son.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn more about the territory within the promise land that was allotted to the “tribe of Manasseh”. As we can see, there were many descendants of Joseph and Manasseh who received this gift from God. In like manner, God desires a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to give us the ability to live in a manner that is pleasing to Him wherever He places us in the world. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; Revelation 4:11)

Next time we learn how, “Zelophehad … had no sons, but daughters”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
