Shaalabbin, Ajalon and Jethiah - Joshua 19:42

In the book of Joshua, we learned how the promise land was being distributed to the tribes of Israel, “and the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, and the coast of their inheritance was Zorah, and Eshtaol, and Irshemesh”, and in chapter nineteen and verse forty-two of Joshua we learn about, “Shaalabbin, and Ajalon, and Jethlah” where we read, 

And Shaalabbin, and Ajalon, and Jethlah

The verse reads, “And Shaalabbin, and Ajalon,, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and Shaalabbin” or Shaalbim whose name means “places of foxes” and was “a town in Dan occupied by the Amorites”, “and Ajalon” or Aijalon whose name means “field of deer” and was “Levitical city in Dan, fourteen miles or twenty-five km NW of Jerusalem, later ruled by the Amorites, then the Benjamites of Judah, then by the Philistines”. Joshua or the writer added “Shaalabbin and Ajalon” to the list of “cities” that were given to the “tribe of Dan”. 

 

The verse goes on to say, “… and Jethlah,” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “and Jethlah” whose name means “he hangs” and was “one of the towns in southern Dan”. Joshua or the writer included “Jethlah” to be among the dwelling places that were provided to the people of “Dan”. 

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn about three more dwelling places that were given to the “tribe of Dan”. “Shaalabbin, Ajalon, and Jethlah” were locations where the people of Dan would worship Jehovah God and give Him honor for His provision. God wants to have a personal intimate relationship with all of us, and He made this possible when we yield to His Son Jesus who was sent into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind and resurrected from the grave after three days. When we surrender to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and to equip us with the ability to live according to that truth in a way that is pleasing to Him. (John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; Colossians 1:12; Revelation 4:11)
