Elon, and Thimnathah, and Ekron - Joshua 19:43

In the book of Joshua, we learned how the promise land was being distributed to the tribes of Israel, “and the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, and the coast of their inheritance was Zorah, and Eshtaol, and Irshemesh, and Shaalabbin, and Ajalon, and Jethlah”, and in chapter nineteen and verse forty-three of Joshua we learn about, “Elon, and Thimnathah, and Ekron” where we read, 

And Elon, and Thimnathah, and Ekron

The verse reads, “And Elon, and Thimnathah,, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and Elon” whose name means “terebinth, mighty” and was “a town in Dan”, “and Thimnathah” or Timnath or Timnah whose name means “portion” and was “a town on the northern boundary of Judah later assigned to Dan”. Joshua or the writer added “Elon and Thimnathah” to the dwelling places that were provided to the “tribe of Dan”. 

 

The verse continues, “… and Ekron.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “and Ekron” whose name means “emigration or torn up by the roots” and was “the most northerly of the five principal cities of the Philistines; located in the lowlands of Judah and later given to Dan”. Joshua or the writer included “Ekron” in the number of “cities” were given to the people of “Dan”. 

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn about three more “cities” that were assigned to the “tribe of Dan”. “Elon, Thimnathah, and Ekron” became places where the people of “Dan” would bring up their families in the worship and adoration of Jehovah God. God wants us to be in a personal loving relationship with Him, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all of us and was raised from the dead after three days to make that possible. When we submit to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to help us live in close relationship with Him while we live in His world. (See Psalm 24:1; Acts 17:28)
