Toward Bethdagon and Zebulun - Joshua 19:27

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families. And their border was Helkath, and Hali, and Beten, and Achshaph. And Alammelech, and Amad, and Misheal; and reaches to Carmel westward, and to Shihorlibnath”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-seven of Joshua we learn how their border, “turns toward the sunrising to Bethdagon, and reaches to Zebulun” where we read,

And turns toward the sunrising to Bethdagon, and reaches to Zebulun, and to the valley of Jiphthahel toward the north side of Bethemek, and Neiel, and goes out to Cabul on the left hand,

The verse reads, “And turns toward the sunrising to Bethdagon, and reaches to Zebulun, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and turns toward the sunrising” which means “and revolves and rotates to the east where the sun comes up”“to Bethdagon” whose name means “house of Dagon” and was “the name of two places in Palestine”, “and reaches to Zebulun” or “and extends and stretches to Zebulun whose name means ‘exalted’ the tenth of the sons of Jacob, sixth and last of Leah; progenitor of Zebulun”. Joshua or the writer said the border to the land given to the “tribe of Asher” went to the east where the sun comes up to “Bethdagon” and extends to “Zebulun”

The verse continues, and to the valley of Jiphthahel toward the north side of Bethemek, and Neiel, and goes out to Cabul on the left hand.Joshua or the writer added the words, “and to the valley of Jiphthahel” which means “and to the vale, lowland and open country belonging to Jiphthahel whose name means ‘God opens’ and was a valley between Zebulun and Asher; location uncertain”, “toward the north side of Bethemek” or “to the northern edge belonging to Bethemek whose name means ‘house of the valley’ and was a place on the border of Asher”, "and Neiel” whose name means “moved by God” and was “a place on the border of the territory of Asher”, “and goes out to Cabul” which means “and proceeds forward and departs to Cabul whose name means ‘binding’ and was a city on the border of Asher and located approximately ten miles (16 km) east of Akko; modern ‘Kabul'" “on the left hand” or “upon the left hand side”. Joshua or the writer shared how the border of the land given to the “tribe of Asher” proceeded to the lowland belonging to “Jiphthahel” to the northern edge of“Bethel and Neiel” as well as to “Cabul” in the “left hand” direction.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn more about the boundaries to the territory provided to the “tribe of Asher” within the promise land. All of the above mentioned places were to be used by the people of “Asher” to raise their families while acknowledging the provision of Jehovah God. God wants to have a personal intimate relationship with all of us, and He made provision for this when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we surrender our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to help us live in a manner that is pleasing to Him in the places He gives us in the world. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; 17:28; Revelation 4:11)

Next time we learn how the border of Asher included, “Hebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
