In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “the fourth lot came out to Issachar, for the children of Issachar according to their families. And their border was toward Jezreel, and Chesulloth, and Shunem, and Hapharaim, and Shion, and Anaharath, and Rabbith, and Kishion, and Abez,, and Remeth, and Engannim, and Enhaddah, and Bethpazzez. And the coast reaches to Tabor, and Shahazimah, and Bethshemesh; and the outgoings of their border were at Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-three of Joshua we learn how, “this is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar” where we read,
This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families,
the cities and their villages.
The verse reads, “This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families,” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “this is the inheritance” which means “the above mentioned territory existed as the possession, property, portion, share and heritage” “of the children” which means “belonging to the offspring and progeny” “of Issachar” or “belonging to Issachar whose name means ‘there is recompense’ and was the ninth son of Jacob and the fifth by Leah his first wife and the progenitor of a tribe by his name”, “according to their families” which means “in keeping and aligned with their, the people of Issachar’s, kinsmen, kindred and relatives”. Joshua or the writer referred to the portion and share of the promise land that was given to the offspring belonging to “Issachar” and their relatives.
The verse continues, “the cities and their villages.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “the cities” which means “the dwelling places and places of wakening” “and their villages” or “and their, the cities’, settled abodes and towns”. Joshua or the writer included the dwelling places and settled abodes that accompanied the region that was allotted to the “tribe of Issachar”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see the recap of the land that was allotted to the people of “Issachar”. Tribe by tribe and people group by people group God was distributing the promise land to the people of Israel just the way He promised. God loves people, and because He wants us to live with Him for all eternity, we must have our sin removed. (See Romans 3:10;23; 6:23) For this reason He sent His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the grave after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth so we live in a manner that is pleasing to Him. Let all who read these words yield to Jesus and receive God’s everlasting life. (See John 3:16)
Next time we learn how, “the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
