In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “the fourth lot came out to Issachar, for the children of Issachar according to their families. And their border was toward Jezreel, and Chesulloth, and Shunem, and Hapharaim, and Shion, and Anaharath, and Rabbith, and Kishion, and Abez,, and Remeth, and Engannim, and Enhaddah, and Bethpazzez. And the coast reaches to Tabor, and Shahazimah, and Bethshemesh; and the outgoings of their border were at Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families, the cities and their villages”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-four of Joshua we learn how, “the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher” where we read,
And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families.
The verse reads, “And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and the fifth lot” which means “and the fifth portion or share” “came out for the tribe” which means “proceeded forth and was assigned on behalf of the clan and people group” “of the children of Asher” or “pertaining to the offspring and progeny belonging to Asher whose name means ‘happy’ and was the son of Jacob and Zilch and was the progenitor of the tribe of Asher”. Joshua or the writer shared how the “fifth” portion of land was assigned to the offspring of “Asher” who were part of the people of “Israel”.
The verse goes on to say, “… according to their families.” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “according to” which means “in keeping with and accompanied by” “their families” or “their, the people of Asher’s, kinsmen, kindred and relatives”. Joshua or the writer shared how the relatives belonging to “Asher” were also included in the distribution of territory within the promise land.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover the next tribe, “Asher”, of the people of Israel who were given territory within the promise land. God said He would provide land to the people of Israel, and He kept His word. God has also promised eternal life and forgiveness of sins to everyone who trusts in, relies upon and clings to His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised from the dead after three days. Jesus paid the price of death for our sins, and our part is to wholly believe in Him. This is God’s promise, (See John 3:16), and even as He did with the people of Israel and the “tribe of Asher”, so will He do with us when we surrender completely to Him.
