In the book of Joshua, we learned how the promise land was being distributed to the tribes of Israel, “and the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, and the coast of their inheritance was Zorah, and Eshtaol, and Irshemesh, and Shaalabbin, and Ajalon, and Jethlah, and Elon, and Thimnathah, and Ekron, and Eltekeh, and Gibbethon, and Baalath, and Jehud, and Beneberak, and Gathrimmon”, and in chapter nineteen and verse forty-six of Joshua we learn about, “Mejarkon, and Rakkon, with the border before Japho” where we read,
And Mejarkon, and Rakkon, with the border before Japho.
The verse reads, “And Mejarkon, and Rakkon, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and Mejarkon” whose name means “waters of yellowness” and was “a town in Dan near Joppa”, “and Rakkon” whose name means “the temple” and was “a well-watered place in Dan near Joppa”. Joshua or the writer added “Mejarkon and Rakkon” to the cities that were allotted to the “tribe of Dan”.
The verse goes on to say, “… with the border before Japho.” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “with the border” which means “alongside and accompanied by the edge, circuit and boundary” “before Japho” or “in front and in the presence of Japho or Joppa whose name means ‘beautiful’ and was a town on the southwest coast of Palestine in the territory of Dan which became primary port of Jerusalem during reign of Solomon”. Joshua or the writer included “Japho” in the number of dwelling places provided to the people of “Dan”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we discover three more places, “Mejarkon, and Rakkon, with the border before Japho”, which were provided to the “tribe of Dan” within the promise land. One by one each of these “cities” were allotted to “Dan” so their people could live and worship God within them. God wants to have a personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the grave after three days. When we surrender to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to help us live according to that truth so our lives will be pleasing to Him. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; Revelation 4:11)
