In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “this is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families” which included among others “Halhul, Bethzur, and Gedor, and Maarath, and Bethanoth, and Eltekon; six cities with their villages: Kirjathbaal, which is Kirjathjearim, and Rabbah; two cities with their villages”, and in chapter fifteen and verse sixty-one of Joshua we learn about, “Betharabah, Middin, and Secacah” where we read,
In the wilderness, Betharabah, Middin, and Secacah
The verse reads, “In the wilderness, …” Joshua or the writer began with the word, “in" which means “within” “the wilderness” or “the uninhabited pasture or desert area”. Joshua or the writer began to share about places within the “desert” that were allotted to the “tribe of Judah”.
The verse continues, “… Betharabah, Middin, and Secacah.” Joshua or the writer added the word, “Betharabah” whose name means “house of the desert valley or place of the depression” and was “a place in Judah or in Benjamin, site unknown”, “Middin” whose name means “measures” and was “one of the six cities of Judah located in the wilderness”, “and Secacah” whose name means “thicket” and was “one of the 6 cities of Judah located in the wilderness bordering on the Dead Sea”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Betharabah, Middin and Secacah” were within the “desert” and included in the places given to the people of “Judah”.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn about three more “cities”, "Betharabah, Middin, and Secacah” which were among the places given to the “tribe of Judah”. These locations were in the desert plain and would become territories within which the people of “Judah” would raise their families in the sight of God. God knows where we are as well, and because He desires to have a personal relationship with us, He sent His Son Jesus to died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and to be raised from the grave after three days. When we surrender to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to empower us to live according to that truth in a manner that is pleasing to Him. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; Revelation 4:11)
Next time Joshua or the writer shares about, “Nibshan, and the city of Salt, and Engedi”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
