All These Things Shall Come Upon This Generation - Matthew 23:36

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told the “scribes and Pharisees”, “fill you up then the measure of your fathers. You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you escape the damnation of hell? Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them you shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall you scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom you slew between the temple and the altar”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse thirty-six of his book Matthew shared how Jesus said, “all these things shall come upon this generation” where we read:

Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

The verse reads, Verily I say unto you, ...” Matthew began with the word, “verily” which means “truly, surely and of a truth” “I say” or “Jesus utters, declares and proclaims” “unto you” which means “to the scribes and Pharisees”. Matthew shared how Jesus certified as “truth” that which He is about to declare to the “scribes and Pharisees”.

The verse continues, “... All these things shall come upon this generation.” Matthew added the words, “all these things” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the things the scribes and Pharisees did to the prophets, wise men and scribes“shall come upon” or “will arise, appear and be present with” “this generation” or “the whole multitude living at the same time”. Matthew shared how Jesus declared everything the “religious leaders” did to the “prophets, wise men and scribes” was going to “happen” to them.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus told the “scribes and Pharisees” they would receive retribution for the way they treated His “sent ones”. God observes those who mistreat His ministers, and although He is a God of grace and mercy, He is also a God of judgment. God's offer is salvation from sins through Jesus Christ His Son, and His message is given through ministers who abide by His scriptures. Those who are wise will pay attention to the “good news” from God and His “sent ones” and submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus cried out, “Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
