No Man or Angel Knows the Day or Hour - Matthew 24:36

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus instructed His disciples, Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is nigh. So likewise you, when you shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-six of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus told His disciples, “of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels” where we read:

But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

The verse reads, But of that day and hour knows no man, ...” Matthew began with Jesus' word, “but” which means “moreover and” “of that day” or “about, concerning and because of that last day of this present age, the day Christ will return from heaven, raise the dead, hold the final judgment and perfect his kingdom” “and hour” which means “a certain definite time or season fixed by natural law and returning with the revolving year” “knows” or “perceives, notices, discerns and discovers” “no man” which means “no person whether male or female”. Matthew shared how Jesus said no one knows the exact “day or hour” when His coming and the end of the earth shall occur.

The verse goes on to say, “... no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” Matthew added Jesus' word, “no” or “neither and in no way”, “not the angels” which means “none of the messengers” “of heaven” or “belonging to the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”, “but” which means “if and whether not lest” “my Father only” which means “Jesus' Heaven Father who is God”. Matthew shared how Jesus said not even the “angels in heaven” know when these things shall be. Only God the Father knows the timing of them.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how only God knows when all these things shall come to pass. Reports of Jesus coming at any other time are false, and neither man nor angel knows when the actual time of His return shall be. Those who are wise will study and understand these words of Jesus and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” before these things come to pass. Jesus said, “look up, your redemption draws near”. (See Luke 21:28)

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus tells His disciples that His “coming” will be, “as the days of Noah were”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
