My Lord Delays His Coming - Matthew 24:48

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be you also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man comes. Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has made ruler over his household to give them meat in due season?Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse forty-eight of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus shares about, “the evil servant” saying “in his heart, my lord delays his coming” where we read:

But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delays his coming;

The verse reads, But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, ...” Matthew began with Jesus' word, “but” which means “moreover and” “and if that evil servant” which means “and whether the bad natured, troublesome, injurious, pernicious, destructive and baneful slave, bondman and man of servile condition” “shall say” or “will utter, declare and proclaim” “in his heart” or “within the evil servant's vigor, sense of physical life and center and seat of spiritual life”. Matthew shared how Jesus presented the condition of an “evil servant” making a determination within his own “heart” or seat of spiritual life”.

The verse continues, “... My lord delays his coming;” Matthew added Jesus' words, “my lord” or “the evil servant's master” “delays” which means “lingers and tarries” “his coming” which means “the lord's arrival, appearing and showing forth”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the “evil servant” thinks his “lord” lingers and tarries without appearing.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the “evil servant” makes a determination within his “heart or mind” that his “master” will not appear any time soon. Those who are “wicked” believe their “lord” will tarry, so they are lax and unprepared for his arrival. God desires for people to align with Him through His Son Jesus, and they are to be constantly aware that at any time their “master” may appear. Those who are wise will not only submit their lives to Jesus, but also work in expectancy of His return at any moment. May all who read these words never be known as the “evil unsuspecting servant”.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus says, “the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looks not for him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
