Left a Desolate House - Matthew 23:38

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus cried out, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that killed the prophets, and stoned them which are sent unto you, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you would not!”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse thirty-eight of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus declared, “your house is left unto you desolate” where we read:

Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

The verse reads, Behold, your house ...” Matthew began with the word, “behold” which means “look at, lo and see” “your house” or “the people in Jerusalem's dwelling place, habitation and abode”. Matthew shared how Jesus referred to the “dwelling place and habitation” of the people who were in Jerusalem.

The verse continues, “... is left unto you desolate. Matthew added the words, “is left unto you” or “is disregarded, omitted and neglected toward the people of Jerusalem as” “desolate” which means “solitary, lonely and uninhabited”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the dwelling place of the people of Jerusalem was to become “solitary, lonely and uninhabited”.

When we think through upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see Jesus release the city of Jerusalem to their own demise. They refused to receive Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”, so He allowed them to perish. God wants every person to be in a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they receive Him, they shall inherit “everlasting life”. However, if they refuse to accept Him, He will allow them to be “solitary, lonely and uninhabited”. As the apostle John wrote, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” (John 3:16-18)

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus tells Jerusalem they will not see Him until they say, “Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord.”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
