No Knowledge Until the Flood Came - Matthew 24:39

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-nine of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus referred to people, “not knowing until the flood came” where we read:

And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away;

so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

The verse reads, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away;” Matthew began with Jesus' words, “and knew not” which means “and the people who were eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage did not understand, perceive, discover or discern” “until the flood came” or “till the time when the flooding of the earth arose, appeared and came into being”, “and took them all away” which means “and moved them from their place, carried them away and caused them to cease”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the people who were living normally were unaware of the destruction that was to come until the “flood” came and destroyed them all.

The verse continued, “so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” Matthew added Jesus' words, “so shall also” or “even and indeed in the same manner will” “the coming” which means “the arrival and advent” “of the Son of man be” or “pertaining to God's Son Jesus”. Matthew shared how Jesus said His “advent” or return will be just as surprising as the flood was for the people who lived in Noah's time.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we understand that Jesus' appearing will happen very much like the “flood” in Noah's time. The people who lived around Noah continued with their lives as though nothing horrible was going to happen to them, and they were caught off guard as the “flood waters” came upon the earth. The same will be true for those who live in the time when Jesus returns. Life will be as normal, and only those who have surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be saved. All others will be surprised by His coming, and woe be to those who reject His offer to enter in to His “ark” of salvation.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus shares how there, “shall two be in the field”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
