The Sign of the Son of Man - Matthew 24:30

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus declared, “then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven” where we read:

And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

The verse reads, And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven:” Matthew began with Jesus' words, “and then shall appear” which means “and at that time and moment will be bright and resplendent” “the sign” which means “the miracle, wonder, mark and token” “of the Son of man” which refers to “the Son of God who is Jesus” “in heaven” or “within the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the time of the darkening of the sun and moon, the “falling” of the “stars” as well as the agitation of “the powers of the heavens” would be when He as the Son of God will manifest Himself.

The verse goes on to say, “and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” Matthew added the words, “and then” or “and at that time and moment” “shall all the tribes” or “will each, every, the whole and everyone of the offshoots, races and clans” “of the earth” or “pertaining to the arable land, country, region and territory” “mourn” which means “beat their breasts in grief, be cut down, lament and wail”, “and they shall see” or “and the tribes of the earth will perceive, notice, discover and discern” “the Son of man” which refers to “the Son of God who is Jesus” “coming” or “arising, appearing and showing forth Himself” “in the clouds” which means “within the clouds which form in the sky” “of heaven” or “belonging to the aerial heavens or sky and the region where the clouds and the tempests gather, and where thunder and lightning are produced” “with power” which refers to “with strength, ability and inherent and miraculous power” “and great glory” or “large and massive praise, honor, splendor and brightness”. Matthew shared how Jesus said everyone on the “earth” will be in sorrow and grief when the “sun, moon, stars and powers of the heavens” are affected and they “see” Him coming in His “power and authority” within the “clouds” above.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we discover the dramatic affect the great tribulation has upon the earth and heavens. The “sun and moon” will not give their normal light, and the “stars will fall” and “the powers of the heavens” will be in ciaos, and at that moment, Jesus will appear in the clouds. This “second advent” of Jesus will be different than His first coming as He will return with power and authority over everything and every person, and because people on the earth rejected His invitation to know Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they shall wail and grieve. Jesus will come again. He knows the future in advance, and all who consider His words should respond by receiving Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” as the only way escape all these things.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus declares how the Son of man, “shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
