You Know Not What Hour Your Lord Comes - Matthew 24:42

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse forty-two of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus declares, “you know not what hour your Lord comes” where we read:

Watch therefore: for you know not what hour your Lord does come.

The verse reads, Watch therefore:” Matthew began with Jesus' word, “watch” which means “wake, give strict attention to, be cautious and active” “therefore” which means “then, accordingly, consequently and these things being so”. Because the return of the Lord could be at any time, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples to be on the lookout and awake.

The verse goes on to say, “for you know not what hour your Lord does come.” Matthew added Jesus' word, “for” or “because, since, on account that” “you know not what hour” which means “the disciples will not understand, perceive, discern or discover the time” “your Lord or “the disciple's one to whom a person or thing belongs about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah” “does come” which means “arises, shows Himself and arrives”. Matthew shared how Jesus said none of His disciples knew the time when He shall return to the earth.

When we think through upon Matthew's words in this verse, we understand Jesus' charge for His disciples to be constantly looking for Him to return to the earth. Since they did not know the time when He shall appear, they are to be aware that at any moment He could return. God desires every person to be in a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when He returns, He shall receive unto Himself those who believe in, trust in, rely upon and cling to Him. May all who read these words hear and understand Jesus' words and “watch”.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus tells His disciples what would happen, “if the goodman of the house had known in what hour the thief would come”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
