The Lord Coming in an Unaware Hour - Matthew 24:50

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus told His disciples, if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be you also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man comes. Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has made ruler over his household to give them meat in due season?Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delays his coming. And shall begin to smite his fellow-servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse fifty of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus continued His thought by saying, “the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looks not for him” where we read:

The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looks not for him,

and in an hour that he is not aware of,

The verse reads, The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looks not for him, ...” Matthew began with Jesus' words, “the lord” which means “he to whom a person or thing belongs about which he has power of deciding or master” “of that servant” which means “pertaining to the evil servile one” “shall come” or “will appear, arise and show itself” “in a day” which means “in a time and hour” “when” or “at a time and moment” “he looks not” or “the evil servant does not expect whether in hope or fear” “for him” which means “for the evil servant”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples the “evil servants' master” would appear at a time when he was not expecting him.

The verse continues, “... and in an hour that he is not aware of.” Matthew added Jesus' words, “and in an hour” or “and within an hour of the day” “that he is not aware of” which means “to which the evil-servant is totally oblivious”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the timing of the master's coming would be “in an hour” to which the “evil servant” is unaware.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how this “evil servant” lived as though his master would never return to make an accounting of his “servant's progress”. Because the “evil servant” did not believe his master would return, he lived in debauchery and reviling. God desires for all people to know that He sent His Son Jesus into the world to “die” for their sins. Jesus rose from the grave three days later, and now He ever lives to bring people into a relationship with His father through the “gospel”. Jesus will come again, and those who are wise will yield their lives to Him and begin to live according to His word. Those who do not will be as this “evil servant” and be surprised by His sudden appearing.

Next time Matthew writes how Jesus says the master, shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
