Anna Gives Thanks to the Lord Luke 2:38

After Luke the physician wrote about “Simeon” who was in Jerusalem he shared about, “Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day”, and in chapter two and verse thirty-eight of his book Luke shared how Anna, “gave thanks likewise unto the Lord” where we read:

And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord,

and spoke of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

The verse reads, “And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, ...” Luke began with the words, “and she coming in that instant” which means “and Anna entering into the temple at that definite and very moment” “gave thanks likewise” or “confessed, responded and replied in gratitude and praise” “unto the Lord” which means “toward the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”. Luke shared how Anna entered into the temple and joined in Simeon's praise and “thanks” toward God for the baby Jesus.

The verse continues, “... and spoke of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” Luke added the words, “and spoke of him” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed of Jesus” “to all them” or “to each, every, the whole and everyone of the people” “that looked for redemption” which means “who accepted, received and expected ransoming and deliverance from the penalty of sin” “in Jerusalem” or “within the city of Jerusalem which means set you double peace”. Luke shared how Anna also spoke over Jesus to everyone who was within the temple and were in search of the “deliverance from sin” for all people who were in Jerusalem.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we get a glimpse of Anna's desires and prayers for her own city and country. She knew all people needed to be delivered from the penalty of sin, and when she saw Jesus, she was looking at the One who could “save” them. God loves people, and He desires to have a personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus. Jesus is the Savior of the world, and those who are wise will yield their lives unto Him and give Him “thanks” and “praise” even as Anna.

Next time Luke shares how Joseph and Mary, “returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
