The Babe Leaping in Elisabeth's Womb - Luke 1:44

Luke the physician wrote how Mary questioned the “angel Gabriel” concerning her being pregnant with the Son of God. She asked, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to your word. And the angel departed from her. And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda. And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?, and in chapter one and verse forty-four Luke shared how Elisabeth said, “as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb” where we read:

For, lo, as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears,

the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

The verse reads, “For, lo, as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears, ... Luke began with the words, “For, lo” or “because, since and on account that look, behold and consider”, “as soon as the voice” which means “even as the sound, tone and speech” “of your salutation sounded” or “of Mary's greeting appeared, was made and finished” “in my ears” which refers to “within Elisabeth's physical ears”. Luke shared how Elisabeth continued her speech toward Mary as she referred to the exact time when Mary greeted her.

The verse continues, “... the babe leaped in my womb for joy.” Luke added the words, “the babe leaped” which means “the baby jumped or moved sympathetically” “in my womb for joy” or “within the stomach or belly of Elisabeth with exceeding gladness”. Luke shared how the “baby” within Elisabeth's “womb” “jumped” with “gladness” as soon as she heard Mary greet her.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Elisabeth knew the visit from Mary was special because the “baby” within her stomach “jumped for joy” when Mary greeted her. This physical manifestation was enough to make Elisabeth know God's presence was with her, and she could not contain her speech any longer. God loves people to acknowledge His presence and blessings, and when they yield their lives to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they will have received the revelation of God that He desires for them to acquire.

Next time Luke shares how Elisabeth says, “blessed is she that believes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
