Signs Made to Zacharias - Luke 1:62

Luke the physician wrote how Zacharias and Elisabeth had a son who was promised by the “angel Gabriel”, “And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. And they said unto her, There is none of your kindred that is called by this name, and in chapter one and verse sixty-two of his book Luke shared how, “they made signs to his father” where we read:

And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

The verse reads, “And they made signs to his father, ...” Luke began with the words, “and they made signs” or “and the people who circumcised the son of Zacharias and Elisabeth's son beckoned or communicated by nods or gestures” “to his father” which means “to the child's male progenitor and direct ancestor”. Luke shared how the people circumcising the son of Zacharias and Elisabeth “communicated” with Zacharias by “gestures”.

The verse goes on to say, “... how he would have him called.” Luke continued with the words, “how he would have him” which means “what Zacharais desired for his son to be” “called” or “named”. Luke shared how those circumcising Zacharias and Elisabeth's son used their “gestures” to determine what Zacharias wanted his son's name to be.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we notice how Zacharias was still unable to speak or communicate with those circumcising his son. Even as “Gabriel” told him, Zacharias was stricken as a “mute”, and therefore they needed to make “gestures” to him to determine his son's name. God was faithful with his promise concerning Zacharias, and He was continuing with His plan to bring forth the “fore-runner” of His Messiah and Son Jesus. God loves people, and He wants them to be in a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and every part of His plan, including the naming of Zacharias and Elisabeth's son, was to give people an opportunity to know Him as their “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Zacharias, “asked for a writing table”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
