Jesus Grows in Spirit, Wisdom and Grace - Luke 2:40

Luke the physician wrote after Joseph and Mary, “performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth”, and in chapter two and verse forty of his book Luke shared how, “the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom” where we read:

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom:

and the grace of God was upon him.

The verse reads, “And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom:” Luke began with the words, “and the child grew” or “and Jesus increased and became greater physcially”, “and waxed strong in spirit” which means “was strengthen and made strong in His essence which was devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and He was possessed with the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting”, “filled with wisdom” or “completed and made full with intelligence with very diverse matters”. Luke shared how Jesus “grew” “physically” and “spiritually” as He was “filled” with “intelligence” in a wide variety of matters.

The verse continues, “and the grace of God was upon him.” Luke added the words, “and the grace” which means “and that which afford joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness and goodwill” “of God” or “belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “was upon him” which means “was on Jesus”. Luke shared how God's “joy, delight, loveliness and goodwill” was upon Jesus.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn of Jesus' “growth” “physically” and “spiritually”. Jesus was getting older, maturing physically and His knowledge of a variety of subjects was increasing as well. Jesus was God incarnate, and yet, He subjected Himself to the process of “growth” that people go through every day. Jesus desired to identify with people so He could relate to their experiences. Jesus grew, and because He loves people so much, God extended His “grace” toward Jesus in the same manner He desires to share His grace with everyone else. Those who are wise will see Jesus' growth as a miracle of God allowing Himself to become what every person needs so they might be saved.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus', “parents went to Jerusalem every year”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
