The Horn of Salvation - Luke 1:69

Luke the physician wrote how Zacharias and Elisabeth had a son whom they named “John”. After naming their son, “immediately” Zacharias' “tongue loosed, and he spoke, and praised God. And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he has visited and redeemed his people, ...”, and in chapter one and verse sixty-nine of his book Luke shared how Zacharias says God, “has raised up a horn of salvation for us” where we read:

And has raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

The verse reads, “And has raised up an horn of salvation for us ...” Luke began with the words, “and has raised up” or “and has aroused from sleep, produced and made to appear” “a horn of salvation” which means “a projecting extremity in a shape like a horn, a point or apex which is a symbol of strength and courage” “for us” or “on behalf of Zacharias and his people who heard about the birth of John”. Luke shared how Zacharias “prophesied” that God had given them a “symbol of strength” and courage who would be a mighty and valiant helper and the author of deliverance through the Messiah.

The verse continues, “... in the house of his servant David.” Luke added the words, “in the house” which means “in the dwelling place, residence, abode and domicile” “of his servant” or “belonging to God's attendant and minister” “David” which refers to “King David of Israel whose name means beloved”. Luke shared how the “horn of salvation” was provided to “Israel” which was the “dwelling place” of “King David”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Zacharias “prophesied” how his son would be the “messenger” of the “salvation” that was being “raised” up for the people of Israel. Zacharias' son “John” was to be the “fore-runner” of the Messiah Jesus, and Jesus was to provide “salvation” not only to Israel, but also to the whole world. God sent His Son Jesus to “die” for the “sins” which mankind committed against Him, and when a person receives His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they have aligned with God's plan to send “John”, the “fore-runner” of the Messiah, and His Son as the “point and apex” of His “strength and courage”.

Next time Luke shares how Zacharias says David, “spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
