Great Things Done to Mary - Luke 1:49

Luke the physician wrote how Mary was visited by the “angel Gabriel” and was told she would have a child who was to be the Lord. He also shared that her cousin Elisabeth was pregnant in her old age. Luke shared how afterward, “Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda. And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. And Mary said, My soul does magnify the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed, and in chapter one and verse forty-nine Luke shared how Mary said, “he that is mighty has done to me great things” where we read:

For he that is mighty has done to me great things; and holy is his name.

The verse reads, “For he that is mighty has done to me great things; Luke began with the words, “for he that is mighty” or “because, since and on account that he (or God) who is able, powerful, strong and excelling” “has done to me” which means “has performed to Mary” “great things” or “magnificent, excellent, splendid and wonderful things”. Luke shared how Mary credited God with the “excellent” things which were done in her.

The verse continues, “and holy is his name.” Luke added the words, “and holy” which means “and sacred, pure, morally blameless and religiously and ceremonially consecrated” “is his name” or “is God's name which is used for everything the name covers including thought, feeling, hearing and remembering”. Luke shared how Mary declared the “name” of God to be “sacred, pure and consecrated”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn more from Mary's “magnificat” as she gave God the “glory” for all the wonderful things performed in her. She noted that “God's name” or everything which a name represents was “holy” or “sacred and pure”. Those who have an encounter with God through His Son Jesus Christ learn how wonderful He is, and they recognize His benefits and blessings bestowed upon them. God desires a personal relationship with every person, and when they yield their lives to Jesus, they find themselves desiring to give “glory” to Him even as Mary did.

Next time Luke shares how Mary says, “his mercy is on them that fear him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
