Zacharias Filled with the Holy Ghost - Luke 1:67

Luke the physician wrote that Zacharias and Elisabeth had a son who was promised by God through the “angel Gabriel”. Luke continued, “And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. And they said unto her, There is none of your kindred that is called by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marveled all. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, and praised God. And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him”, and in chapter one and verse sixty-seven of his book Luke shared how, “ his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost” where we read:

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

The verse reads, “And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, ...” Luke began with the words, “and his father Zacharias” or “and John's male progenitor and direct ancestor was Zacharias whose name means remembered of Jehovah” “was filled” which means “was furnished completely” “with the Holy Ghost” or “with the pure, blameless and religiously and ceremonially consecrated third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son”. Luke shared how “John's” “father” was “furnished completely” with God's “Holy Spirit”.

The verse continues, “... and prophesied, saying,” Luke added the words, “and prophesied” which means “spoke forth with divine inspirations”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Luke shared how Zacharias was “filled” with God's Spirit and began to make proclamations concerning the Lord God.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Zacharias was overcome with the “Holy Spirit” and began to share a prophetic word concerning God. We shall discover what he said in the next verse, but let it suffice for now to know that Zacharias, who was “mute”, now spoke with “Holy Spirit” conviction as He referred to God. God desires to “fill” everyone with His Spirit, and His Holy Spirit is made available through believing and trusting in Jesus Christ His Son. Those who yield their lives to Him will receive the “Holy Spirit” of God, and their lives will be used to declare His wonderful works. Let all who read these words submit to Him and be “filled”.

Next time Luke shares how Zacharias says, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
