Delivery Day for Mary - Luke 2:6

Luke the physician wrote how, “ there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child”, and in chapter two and verse six of his book Luke shares when Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem, “the days were accomplished that she should be delivered” where we read:

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

The verse reads, “And so it was, that, while they were there, ...” Luke began with the words, “and so it was” or “and it happened, appeared and came into existence”, “that, while there were there” which means “that during the time when Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem to comply with the mandate to be enrolled for taxing”. Luke referred to the exact time when Joseph and Mary were present in Bethlehem.

The verse continues, “... the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.” Luke added the words, “the days were accomplished” which means “the time period was completed, filled up and furnished” “that she should be delivered” or “that Mary would bring forth, produce and birth her child”. Luke shared how Mary's full pregnancy term had come, and she was ready to bring forth her first child.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn it was time for the “birth” of Mary's baby. She was “full term” in her pregnancy, and she would “deliver” her child very soon. The timing for this event was while she and Joseph were in Bethlehem even as Micah the prophet said. (See Micah 5:2) God's plan for the salvation of mankind was at hand, and it was time for His Messiah Son Jesus to be born. Each detail of Jesus' birth was being fulfilled, and those who look into these things and consider them carefully will realize the awesome power, purpose and plan of God so people might receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Mary, “brought forth her firstborn son”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
