Before the Mountains and the Hills - Proverbs 8:25

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said of wisdom, “When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty-five of Proverbs Solomon shared how wisdom was established, “before the mountains” and “the hills” where we read,

Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

The verse begins, “Before the mountains were settled, ...” Solomon began with the words, “before the mountains” or “in advance and prior to the risings above the plains or mountainous hills” “were settled” which means “were sunk down, planted and fastened in place”. Solomon shared how God's “wisdom” existed in advance of the mountainous hills being fastened in place.

The verse continues, “... before the hills was I brought forth:” Solomon added the words, “before the hills” or “in advance of the lower risings above the plain” “was I brought forth” which means “was I, wisdom, twisting, travailing, whirling about, dancing and writhing”. Solomon said “wisdom” was in place in advance of the small risings on the earth.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how “wisdom” was established in advance of the establishing of the “mountains and hills” in the world. God fashioned and formed the risings above the plain with His great “wisdom”, and those who live among them and marvel at their wonder are reminded of the majesty and greatness of Him. This same God desires to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus, and when we yield our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and extend to us His wonder working “wisdom” which was in place before the “hills and mountains”.
