In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding”, and in chapter nine and verse seven of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that reproves a scorner gets to himself shame” where we read,
He that reproves a scorner gets to himself shame:
and he that rebukes a wicked man gets himself a blot.
The verse begins, “He that reproves a scorner gets to himself shame:” Solomon began with the words, “he that reproves” or “the person whether male or female who chastens, disciplines, instructs and admonishes” “a scorner” which means “a mocker, boaster or arrogant speaking person” “gets to himself shame” or “fetches, seizes, lays hold of and procures to their own self ignominy, confusion, dishonor and reproach”. Solomon shared how the person who disciplines and corrects someone who is boasting and arrogant lays hold of confusion and dishonor to their own selves.
The verse goes on to say, “and he that rebukes a wicked man gets himself a blot.” Solomon continued with the words, “and he that rebukes” or “and the person whether male or female who proves, derides, judges, reproves and corrects” “a wicked man” which means “a bad, malignant, evil, criminal, ungodly and hostile to God person whether male or female” “gets himself a blot” or “fetches, seizes, lays hold of and procures to their own self a spot, physical defect and moral stain”. Solomon said the person who judges and corrects a malignant and ungodly person seizes a spot or moral stain themselves.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the person who rebukes someone who mocks and boasts arrogantly will receive an insult in return, and the person who corrects and reproves an evil and ungodly person will often be hurt by that person. It seems much like the saying, “no good deed goes unpunished”. God, however, was willing to risk everything for us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, and although some people reject Him, He will extend forgiveness of sins, eternal life and His Holy Spirit to everyone who receives Him. Let all who read these words give honor, glory and praise to Jehovah God and His Son Jesus by receiving their offer and invitation to be saved from “mockery” and “wickedness”.
Next time Solomon says, “reprove not a scorner, lest he hate you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
