In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning”, and in chapter nine and verse ten of Proverbs Solomon said, “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” where we read,
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
The verse begins, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom:” Solomon began with the words, “the fear of the LORD” or “the terror, awe, reverence and piety of Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name of the One True God” “is the beginning” which means “exists as the commencement and first principle” “of wisdom” or “belonging to skill, shrewdness and prudence”. Solomon shared how having awe and reverence toward Jehovah God exists as the commencement pertaining to skill, shrewdness and prudence.
The verse continues, “and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” Solomon added the words, “and the knowledge” or “and the perception, skill, discernment and understanding” “of the holy” which means “belonging to the ceremonially and morally sacred” “is understanding” or “exists as discernment, meaning and knowledge”. Solomon said perception and skill belonging to the morally sacred exist as discernment and meaning.
When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we discover the first requirement for obtaining the “wisdom” of God. Having reverence and awe toward Jehovah God is required if a person is to be truly “wise”, and having discernment of what is morally sacred brings a person to knowledge and meaning concerning God and life itself. God wants us to be wise, and when we honor Him for who He is and what He does, we will gain a position to receive “wisdom” from Him. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and bless us with His “wisdom” in accordance with His perfect “holy” mind and will.
Next time Solomon says, “for by me your days shall be multiplied”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
