Give Instruction to a Wise Man - Proverbs 9:9

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate you: rebuke a wise man, and he will love you”, and in chapter nine and verse nine of Proverbs Solomon said, “give instruction to a wise man” where we read,

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser:

teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

The verse begins, Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: Solomon began with the words, “give instruction” or “deliver, set up, grant and bring discipline, correction and admonition” to a wise man which means “toward a skillful, shrewd, crafty, wily and subtle person whether male or female”, “and he will be yet wiser” or “and he, the wise person, shall exist as even more skilled, shrewd, crafty, wily and subtle”. Solomon shared how the skilled and shrewd person who is disciplined and corrected will become even more shrewd and skilled in their lives.

The verse goes on to say, “teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.” Solomon continued with the words, “teach a just man” or “recognize, acknowledge, confess and consider a lawful, righteous and correct person whether male or female”, “and he will increase in learning” which means “and the lawful, righteous and correct person shall add, be joined and do more in persuasiveness, instruction and insight”. Solomon said when a person who is righteous and lawful is instructed, they will add even more instruction and knowledge to their lives.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how God wants us to be teachable, and when we yield to His “wisdom” and “instruction”, we will continue to grow in skill, shrewdness, prudence and knowledge. God wants us to know Him, (See John 17:3) and when we realize He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, we can receive Him as our personal “Savior and Lord” to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and continually instructed according to His “wise” ways in the world.

Next time Solomon says, “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
