A Great Image - Daniel 2:31

In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how he spoke to King Nebuchadnezzar and said, O king, your thoughts came into your mind upon your bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that reveals secrets makes known to you what shall come to pass. But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that you might know the thoughts of your heart”, and in Daniel chapter two and verse thirty-one of his book, Daniel shared how he told King Nebuchadnezzar, “you, O king, saw, and behold a great image” where we read,

You, O king, saw, and behold a great image.

This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before you; and the form thereof was terrible.

The verse reads, “You, O king, saw, and behold a great image. Daniel began with the words, “you, O king” or “you, King Nebuchadnezzar, O royal ruler and leader”, “saw, and behold” which means “observed, noticed and discerned, and lo, look and consider”“a great image” or “and exceedingly large form or idolatrous figure”. Daniel told King Nebuchadnezzar that he observed an exceedingly massive and large idolatrous figure.

The verse goes on to say, “This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before you; and the form thereof was terrible.” Daniel continued with the words, “this great image” which means “this exceedingly large form or idolatrous figure”, “whose brightness was excellent” or “who possessed a splendorous, surpassing and extraordinary illumination”, “stood before you” which means “was erected and established in front of you, King Nebuchadnezzar”; “and the form thereof” or “and the visual aspect and appearance” “was terrible” which means “existed as dreadful, formidable and fearful”. Daniel said the massive idolatrous figure possessed an extraordinary illumination, was set in place in front of King Nebuchadnezzar and it's appearance was fearsome and ominous.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel how he told King Nebuchadnezzar that he observed an exceedingly large idolatrous figure which possessed and extraordinary illumination and was standing in front of him. This vision was also formidable that it caused tear in those who saw it. Let us remember that God knew about this vision well before King Nebuchadnezzar or Daniel, and because He had a plan and purpose for this “dream”, He reveal it to the king. God knows what is best for mankind, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross and raised from the dead three days later to save people from their sins. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth so we have no need to be afraid regardless of the visions, dreams, circumstances or situations that we observe and experience in our lives.

Next time Daniel shares how he told King Nebuchadnezzar that the image possessed a, “head of gold, breast and arms of silver and the belly and thighs of brass”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
