Broken Iron, Clay, Brass, Silver and Gold - Daniel 2:35

In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how he spoke to King Nebuchadnezzar and said, “You, O king, saw, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before you; and the form thereof was terrible. This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, his legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. You saw till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and broke them to pieces”, and in Daniel chapter two and verse thirty-five of his book, Daniel shared how he told King Nebuchadnezzar, “the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold” were broken to pieces together” where we read,

Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing-floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

The verse reads, “Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing-floors; Daniel began with the words, “then was the iron” or “at the time after the stone struck the feet of the image was the iron metal”, “the clay” which means “the potsherd or clods”, “the brass” or “the copper or bronze”, “the silver” which refers to “the silver metal”, “and the gold” or “and the gold metal”, “broken to pieces together” which means “all shattered, crumbled and crushed into small particles”, “and became like the chaff”or “and came to exist similar and in likeness to the husks” “of the summer threshing-floors” which means “pertaining to the floors used for threshing wheat at the harvest time”. Daniel shared how the iron metal, the potsherd, the brass metal, the silver metal and the gold metal were crushed into small particles and came to exist similar to the husks found on the floors used from threshing wheat after the stone struck the image in the feet.

The verse goes on to say, “and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.” Daniel continued with the words, “and the wind” which means “and the breeze” “carried them away” or “lifted and separated the particles from the location where the image was standing”, “that no place” which means “so not any track or trace” “was found for them” which means “was discovered on behalf of them, the metals that were crushed into small particles”: “and the stone” or “and the rock that was extracted without the use of physical hands” “that smote the image” which means “that struck the idolatrous figure” “became a great mountain” or “came to exist as a huge, large and massive rising above the plain, hill or mountain”, “and filled the whole earth” which means “and covered the entire world”. Daniel said the breeze blew the particles of the image away, and not a trace of them remained. As for the “stone” that was “cut out without hands”, it came to exist as a huge“mountain” that covered the world.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn more about King Nebuchadnezzar's dream through Daniel. Daniel shared how the metals and dirt clods within the image were all scattered after the “stone” struck the feet of it. These crushed particles became like husks on a “threshing-floor” which were so completely blown away by a breeze that not a trace of them was left. Afterward the huge rock that was extracted without physical hands came to exist similar to a huge “mountain” that covered all the world. All of these sites have significance in the history of mankind that leads to God sending His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of everyone. After three days God raised Jesus from the dead, so that when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit so we may know He has our us and our future totally under His control.

Next time Daniel shares how he told King Nebuchadnezzar, “this is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
