Paul
the apostle told the church members in Corinth, “if
we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged”,
and in chapter eleven and verse thirty-two
of First Corinthians, Paul shared with the church members the reason
why, “we are
chastened of the Lord”,
where we read:
But
when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord,
that
we should not be condemned with the world.
The verse begins, “But
when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, ...”.
Paul began
with the word, “but”
which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated “when”
or “at
the time” “we are judged”
which means “the church members and Paul are separated, put
asunder, picked out, selected, chosen and resolved”, “we
are chastened” which
means “are chastised, castigated, corrected, scourge and punished”
“of the Lord”
or “by he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has
power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”.
Paul referred to the times when God “puts asunder, corrects and
castigates” His children.
The
verse goes on to say, “...
that we should not be condemned with the world.”
Paul added
the words, “that we should not”
which means
“so Paul and the church members would not” “be
condemned”
or “be found worthy of punishment and given judgment” “with
the world”
which means “the circle of the earth and the inhabitants and human
family in it”. Paul noted that God “corrects” His children so
they will not be “found worthy of punishment” as others shall be
who are in “the world”.
When
we think through these words from Paul, we understand that he desires
for the church members to know the “value” of being “chastened”
by the Lord Jesus. If they are “judged” by Him, they avoid
the “punishment” that is to come upon those who don't
believe in Jesus in this “world”. God Almighty sent His
Son Jesus Christ to save people from their sins, and if they reject
His plan of salvation, they shall be subject to God's wrath and
judgment. God's children shall be “chastened”, but it is because
He loves them. Let us rejoice in the “saving grace” of Jesus
Christ, and as His children let us be glad that He provides
“correction” as needed.
Next
time Paul tells the church members, “when
you come together to eat, tarry one for another”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
