Paul the apostle told
the Corinthian church members, “there
has no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are
able;”,
and he let them know that God is “faithful”
to provide “a way of escape”
that they “might be able to bear it.”
In chapter ten and verse fourteen of First
Corinthians, Paul told the Corinthian church members to “flee
from idolatry” where
we read:
The
verse begins, “Wherefore,
my dearly beloved,” Paul
began with the word, “Wherefore”
which means “on which very account”, “my
dearly beloved” which
refers to “Paul's esteemed, dear, favorite and worthy of love
church members”. Paul addressed the church members as his ones
“worthy of love”.
The
verse continues, “flee from idolatry”
Paul added
the word, “flee” which
means “seek safety by flight, escape safely out of danger and
vanish” “from idolatry”
which refers to “being separated, departed and distanced from the
worship of false gods”. Paul exhorted the Corinthian church members
to “take flight” or “run from” worshiping idols.
When
we think through these words from Paul, we see this to be his second
command to not be involved in “idolatry”. Worshiping
anything other than God Almighty and His Son Jesus Christ is
“idolatry”, and church members are to avoid and “run”
from them. We should never bow down to “false gods” and this
includes ideas and activities that replace the true God in “time,
energy, effort and resources”. May all who read these words examine
themselves, and if they find any “false gods” in their lives, run
from them.
Next
time Paul exhorts the “wise”
church members to, “judge
what I say”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
