The Contentious Man 1 Corinthians 11:16

Paul the apostle continued to share concerning God's creation order for “the man” and “the woman”, and he questioned whether “it was a shame” for a man to “have long hair”, but he included how it was “her glory” for “a woman” to have “long hair”. In chapter eleven and verse sixteen of First Corinthians, Paul shared with the Corinthian church members if any man seem to be contentious”, where we read:

But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

The verse begins, But if any man seem to be contentious,...”. Paul began with the word, “but” which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be written takes precedence over what was just stated “if any man” which refers to “whether whoever” “seem to be” or “is of the opinion, thinks, supposes, is pleased and determined to be” “contentious”which means “fond of quarrel, strife and disputatious”. Paul referred to a person who thinks in a quarreling and striving manner.

The verse goes on to say, “...we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.” Paul continued with the words, “we have no such” which means “Paul and his companions do not have this kind or sort of” “custom” or “usage or mutual habit”, “neither” which means “nor do” “the churches” or “an assembly of Christians gathered for worship in a religious meeting” “of God” or “belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit. Neither Paul, his companions nor God's churches had the “custom” of “covering”.

When we meditate upon these words from Paul, we see how he referred to himself, his companions and the churches concerning the idea of having or not having the “custom” of “covering”. His discourse was meant for the church members in Corinth, and Jesus Christ loves His churches everywhere and desires for them to be unified. There was no need to have great “contentions” in this area, and should there be any who did, they should refer to Paul, his companions and other churches who had no need to concern themselves with such things.

Next time Paul asks the church members concerning, “that you come together not for the better, but for the worse”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
