Paul
the apostle asked the church members in Corinth, “if
the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body;
is it therefore not of the body?”.
In
chapter twelve and verse sixteen of First Corinthians, Paul asked the
church members about the “ear”
and the “eye” of
“the body”,
where we read:
And if
the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is
it therefore not of the body?
The
verse begins, “And
if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the
body;”. Paul
began with the word, “And if”
which means “and in case” “the
ear” which
refers to “the part of the body used for the faculty of perceiving
with the mind, the faculty of understanding and knowing” “shall
say” which
means “will declare and proclaim”,
“Because”
or “since and on account of” “I
am not”
which means “the ear is not” “the
eye” which
refers to “the part of the body used for vision and sight”, “I
am not” or
“the ear is not” “of the body”
which refers to “belonging to the living corpse or carcass”. Paul
used the example of the “ear”
saying to the “eye”
because it is not an “eye”,
it is not part of “the body” .
The
verse goes on to say, “is
it therefore not of the body?” Paul
continued with the words, “is it
therefore” which
means “is the ear then” “not of
the body”
or “not a part of the living corpse or carcass”? Paul asked
whether the ear not being the eye eliminated it from being part of
the whole “body”.
When
think through these words from Paul, we see how he provides yet
another example of the value of every part of “the body”.
Parts of the body are not the whole body, nor is the whole body just
one part. Jesus Christ's “body”, “the church”, has many
different parts, and all of them are important. Those who are
believers in Jesus all have a valuable role to fulfill in this world,
and as the Lord Jesus reveals what “part of the body” we are, let
us live in the fulness of what He has for us to do.
Next
time Paul shares with the church members concerning, “if
the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing?",
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
