Paul
the apostle continued to share concerning God's creation order for
“the man”
and “the woman”,
and he asked if they knew, “if a man
have long hair, it is a shame unto him?” In
chapter eleven and verse fifteen of First Corinthians, Paul shared
with the Corinthian church members how if, “a
woman has long hair, it is a glory to
her”,
where we read:
But if
a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her
hair is given her for a covering.
The verse begins, “But
if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her:”.
Paul began
with the word, “But”
which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated “if”
or “whether”
“a woman”
or “the female human being” “have
long hair”
or “lets the hair grow to a long length”, “it
is a glory”
which refers to “a praise, splendor and brightness” “to
her” or
“to the woman”.
Paul declared it to be “a splendor and brightness” for “a
woman” to
have “long hair”.
The
verse continues, “for
her
hair is given her for a covering.”
Paul added
the words, “for her hair” which
means “because, since and on account that the woman's hair” “is
given her”
or “is bestowed, granted, supplied, furnished and delivered” “for
a covering”
which means “instead, because and in place of a veil or wrapping”.
Paul declared the “woman's”
long hair to be a “covering”
or “veil” for her.
When
we consider these words from Paul, we see how he implies the “long
hair” of “a woman” becomes her “covering”
or a “veil” by nature. It is the “woman's glory” or
“splendor and brightness” when she has “long hair”,
and therein is a built in “covering” or “power over
her head”. We should keep in mind that Paul is bringing “order”
and “authority” to the church in Corinth which is used to “pagan”
practices involving “men and women” worshiping at and from the
temple of “Aphrodite” who was the goddess of love, beauty,
pleasure, passion and pro-creation. Because Jesus saved these members
of the Corinthian church and brought them into the church, they
needed instruction in true “glory”, “order”,
“authority” and even instruction toward “hair length”.
Let us admire Paul's care to guide this growing church of people, and
may Jesus help us know what true “glory” is as it relates
to Him.
Next
time Paul tells the church members, “if
any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
